preserving the stuctural integrity

The National Trust Innovation Grant enabled the Preservation Society of Charleston to hire engineering Firm 4SE to study the ruins and propose structural stabilization options. Working with Thompson Young Design on the design of the project, Engineer John Moore devised a bracing system of wood to blend and age with the natural environment.  The team selected an internally braced system in order to preserve the visual impact of the mass of the structure when seen from the approach to the site. The new structure lightly touches the ruins, supporting them in place without compromising the historic fabric.
